Kwankwaso Orders Mass Resignations from ADC Ahead of Strategic Shift to NDC

The political landscape in Nigeria appears braced for a significant realignment following reports that Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Governor of Kano State and leader of the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement, has instructed his supporters to relinquish their membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The directive precedes Senator Kwankwaso’s own anticipated defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), which is reportedly scheduled for the coming week.

The shift in allegiance became evident following the formal resignation of Kabiru Adamu Abdullahi, a pivotal Kwankwasiyya figure in the Dala Local Government Area of Kano State. In a formal letter dated 1 May 2026, addressed to his ward chairman, Mr Abdullahi confirmed his immediate departure from the ADC.

“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity given to me to be part of the party and wish you and the party the very best,” the letter stated.

In subsequent statements shared via social media, Mr Abdullahi explicitly linked his exit to the overarching directive issued by the Kwankwasiyya leadership, confirming that the exodus is a coordinated effort rather than an isolated incident.

The rationale behind the mass withdrawal was further clarified by Shehu Wada Sagagi, a prominent leader within the Movement. Speaking on the strategic move, Mr Sagagi noted that the transition to the NDC was a calculated response to the “dangerous legal threats” currently bedevilling the ADC’s leadership and corporate existence.

“In his wisdom, our leader and the Movement agreed that going to the NDC is the best option because there are more dangerous legal threats against the ADC,” Mr Sagagi remarked. “We must look for a way out.”

The move is seen by many analysts as a pre-emptive strike to safeguard the political futures of the Movement’s members against potential judicial disqualifications or administrative collapses within the ADC.

Perhaps the most significant implication of this defection is the anticipated union of Senator Kwankwaso and the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi, within the NDC.

Reports suggest that Mr Obi is also expected to announce his defection imminently, amid intensifying speculation that both men are finalising an arrangement to appear on the same presidential ballot. This potential “mega-alliance” would represent a formidable challenge to the status quo, uniting two of the most substantial support bases in the country under a single partisan banner.

As the deadline for the formal defection approaches next week, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on the NDC, which is rapidly transforming into the primary sanctuary for Nigeria’s leading opposition figures ahead of the next electoral cycle.
