The Labour Party (LP) has formally rescinded the suspension of twenty-six members, culminating in the election of the renowned activist and actress, Hilda Dokubo, as the party’s National Women Leader.
The decision was ratified on Tuesday during the party’s National Convention, held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia. The move is seen as a strategic effort to unify the party’s ranks following a period of internal friction.
The resolution to restore the standing of the affected members was achieved through a definitive voice vote by delegates representing all states of the Federation. Alongside Madam Dokubo, those reinstated include Emmanuel Agida, Abayomi Arabambi, Ogar Osim, Muhammed Aliyu, Casmir Uchenna, Airen Igbinedion, Auwal Ahmed, and eighteen others.
The Chairman of the Elective National Convention, Honourable Ginger Onwusibe, presided over the proceedings, formally announcing the recall of the members to the cheers of the assembled delegates.
The convention reached a crescendo with the elevation of restored members to key leadership roles. Following the formal lifting of her suspension, Hilda Dokubo was overwhelmingly elected to the office of National Women Leader. Her transition from a suspended member to a high-ranking executive official is viewed by political analysts as a powerful symbol of the party’s “forgive and rebuild” policy.
The newly elected National Chairman of the Labour Party, Esther Nenadi-Usman, articulated this sentiment, noting that the party has deliberately chosen a path of magnanimity to ensure its future success.
“The Labour Party has chosen to embrace the path of reconciliation,” the National Chairman remarked. “In our quest for a stronger institution, we believe that forgiveness is a vital instrument for unity and collective growth.”
The Umuahia convention marks a significant turning point for the Labour Party. By resolving long-standing disciplinary disputes and installing a fresh executive team, the party appears poised to present a more cohesive front.
With the inclusion of seasoned figures like Madam Dokubo in the top echelons of leadership, the party aims to strengthen its grassroots appeal and bolster its organisational structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
