The fate of thousands of Rivers kids who sat for this year’s West African School Certificate Examination, WASCE, apparently hangs in the balance. This is because the results of these students who enlisted in State owned secondary schools for the external examination have been allegedly held back by the West African Examination Council, WAEC.
WAEC officials, some school heads who spoke exclusively to the Telegraph under conditions of anonymity revealed, they have withheld the results due to the alleged inability of the Rivers State Government to fulfill its promise to foot the payment of the requisite examination fees. Some of them have told this publication that their allowances as invigilators have not be paid as a result of the alleged failure by government to meet its obligation to the affected students.
Thus far, the examining body which announced the release of the results across the country is yet to officially allege the occurrence of examination malpractices in Rivers State. The Telegraph put calls across to the two mobile lines of the State Commissioner of Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku to obtain Government’s reaction. While one of the lines owned by the Education Commissioner was not reachable, the Telegraph called the functionary’s other line three times, but there was no response. The Telegraph will continue its effort to obtain a reaction from Government officials in Port Harcourt, following the development.
