The Imo State Police Command has arrested three final-year students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) following the alleged murder of a 21-year-old undergraduate.

The victim, Chinedu Chibuzor Christogonus, was a 100-level Cyber Security student and a member of the university’s Man O’ War organisation. He reportedly died after being severely assaulted by fellow members of the paramilitary group over accusations that he had stolen 13,500 Naira.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, DSP Henry Okoye, preliminary investigations revealed that the young undergraduate was unlawfully restrained and subjected to a brutal assault that resulted in fatal injuries.

The police identified the detained suspects as Chukwuemeka Benedict, 21; Kelechi Gospel Ikenna, 24; and Obioma Anastasia, 21. All three are 500-level students at the institution.

Following the ordeal, Mr Christogonus was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, where medical personnel confirmed him dead upon arrival. His remains have since been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and a subsequent post-mortem examination.

The command disclosed that the arrests were executed swiftly under the direct instructions of the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, immediately after the matter was reported. Relevant evidence linked to the crime has also been successfully recovered by detectives.

The police chief has ordered the immediate transfer of the case file to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri for a comprehensive and rigorous inquiry. Mr Bosso directed investigators to track down, question, and apprehend all individuals linked to the incident, emphasizing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

Extending his condolences, Commissioner Bosso assured the bereaved family, the FUTO community, and the general public that the command is committed to conducting a thoroughly professional investigation. He stressed that no suspect would be shielded from prosecution regardless of their social standing or status, whilst appealing to local residents to maintain public order and remain calm as the legal process unfolds.
