The Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Right Honourable Abbas Tajudeen, formally announced the appointment of new minority leadership on Thursday, bringing an end to weeks of protracted debate and lobbying within the legislative chamber.
The announcement, delivered shortly after the commencement of the day’s parliamentary proceedings, establishes a new executive structure for the opposition parties. Fred Agbedi, a lawmaker representing Bayelsa State and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been named the Minority Leader.
Supporting him in the leadership caucus are Abdusamad Dasuki of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), representing Sokoto State, who assumes the role of Deputy Minority Leader, and Mansur Manu Soro of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), representing Bauchi State, who has been appointed as the Minority Chief Whip.
This formal designation concludes a period of significant uncertainty regarding the composition of the minority leadership. The atmosphere within the House had been particularly strained leading up to this decision, marked by vocal dissent from factions within the opposition bloc.
Notably, the member representing the Ideato North and South federal constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, had previously led a cohort of approximately nine lawmakers in a protest on the floor of the House. Demanding immediate resolution to the leadership impasse, these members, including representatives such as Jesse Okey-Joe (Lagos), Aliyu Mustapha (Kaduna), Afam Ogene (Anambra), and Aliyu Misau (Bauchi), had disrupted proceedings with calls of “No announcement, No Sitting.”
The decision by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen to fill these vacancies is expected to restore order and facilitate the resumption of comprehensive legislative business as the House addresses the needs of their respective constituencies.
