The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed the immediate dismissal and subsequent criminal prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and four other officers implicated in the extra-judicial killing of Mr Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

Addressing a press briefing at the Force Headquarters on Thursday, the IGP characterised the incident, which occurred on 26th April 2026, as a “criminal and unacceptable” act that constituted a direct betrayal of the sacred oath of service. He maintained that such conduct is fundamentally antithetical to the values of the Nigeria Police Force.

The killing of Mr Ogidi had elicited widespread condemnation across Delta State, sparking protests from residents and civil rights organisations demanding accountability. In response to the public outcry, IGP Disu ordered the immediate transfer of the involved officers from the Delta State Command to Abuja to ensure a transparent investigation, free from local interference.

The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) and the Orderly Room Tribunal have since concluded their deliberations. Their findings confirmed that ASP Usman and his subordinates acted in gross violation of Force Order 247, which strictly governs the use of firearms, as well as established Standard Operating Procedures.

“The investigation confirmed, without any ambiguity, that ASP Nuhu Usman acted in gross violation of established regulations,” the IGP stated. “No level of criminal suspicion against a citizen justifies extra-judicial killing. Our duty is to protect life, not to extinguish it.”

The IGP confirmed that the police authorities have recommended the summary dismissal of the culpable officers. These recommendations have been formally forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final ratification.

Once the dismissal is ratified, the officers will lose their official immunity and be handed over to the relevant judicial authorities to face criminal charges for unlawful homicide.

“The era of impunity is over,” the IGP declared. “We are demonstrating that every citizen, regardless of their uniform, is accountable under the law. No uniform is a licence to kill.”

Extending his profound condolences to the family and community of the late Mr Ogidi, the IGP described the loss of life as both painful and irreparable. He assured the bereaved that the Force would ensure justice is “swift, transparent, and absolute.”

Whilst acknowledging the anger of the public, IGP Disu appealed to the residents of Delta State and Nigerians at large to remain law-abiding and refrain from civil unrest. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to purging the ranks of “those who betray our mandate,” insisting that the actions of the disgraced officers do not reflect the training or standards of the broader institution.

The Nigeria Police Force, he concluded, remains an institution built upon the rule of law and will continue to hold its personnel to the highest ethical and professional standards.
