The Nigerian Navy has thwarted a significant bid by criminal syndicates to reactivate a dismantled illegal oil refining network in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, security officials confirmed.

The successful interdiction was executed by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER under the auspices of Operation DELTA SENTINEL. The breakthrough comes as part of an intensified, intelligence-led campaign to eradicate crude oil theft and illicit refining activities within the Niger Delta region.

The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, confirmed that the operation was launched following actionable intelligence indicating that oil thieves had returned to the Egbema area. Syndicates were reportedly attempting to rebuild infrastructure at camps that had been deactivated by security forces just a fortnight prior.

Upon storming the identified locations, naval forces uncovered: Three active illegal refining camps that had been hastily reconstructed. An extensive network of 13 dugout pits engineered to store vast volumes of siphoned resources. Approximately 260,000 litres of stolen crude oil. Roughly 405,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel.

The sheer volume of the seized products indicates a determined, large-scale effort by the criminal syndicates to fully restore their illicit production capacity in the zone.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Navy revealed that the operators had been sourcing their raw material directly from an abandoned wellhead. Security analysts note that this highlights a persistent tactical trend wherein criminal networks systematically target and exploit dormant or poorly secured oil infrastructure.

“Despite previous crackdowns and the destruction of illegal refining camps, criminal elements have repeatedly attempted to reoccupy the same locations,” Captain Folorunsho remarked, emphasizing that such defiance necessitates “sustained surveillance and rapid response operations.”

In compliance with standard operating protocols, the navy deactivated the three illegal refining sites, neutralized the dugout pits, and handled the recovered petroleum products in accordance with established anti-crude oil theft procedures. The operation successfully disrupted the syndicates’ supply chain before the black-market fuel could enter commercial circulation.

The Nigerian Navy has reiterated its commitment to sustaining high-tempo, intelligence-driven operations under Operation DELTA SENTINEL. Maritime authorities maintain that these deployments remain vital to dismantling sophisticated criminal logistics networks, protecting critical national energy assets, and safeguarding Nigeria’s broader macroeconomic interests.
