The serene community of Ubima in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State was transformed into a hub of activity on Sunday, 26 April, as high-profile dignitaries from across the country gathered to honour the memory of the late parents of the former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia.
The event, a dual remembrance service, marked the 20th anniversary of the passing of Late Pa Cyprian Nlerechi Omehia and the second anniversary of the transition of Late Madam Cecelia Wahia Omehia.
The proceedings commenced with a solemn thanksgiving service at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church in Ubima. The atmosphere was one of profound reflection as family, friends, and political associates joined the Omehia family to pay their respects.
Clergy and congregants alike offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed, celebrating their legacies and the impact they left on their community through their children and various philanthropic endeavours.
In a gesture reflecting the family’s commitment to the welfare of their kinsmen, the remembrance activities were preceded by a comprehensive medical outreach on Saturday, 25 April. The initiative was designed to provide tangible support to the vulnerable and elderly within the Ubima community and surrounding areas.
During the outreach, several beneficiaries received: Ophthalmological Care: Eye examinations and treatments to address visual impairments, Mobility Support: Distribution of walking aids to the physically challenged and the elderly, and General Medical Interventions: Consultations and treatments for various health conditions.
A beneficiary at the scene remarked that the outreach was a “fitting tribute” to the Omehia parents, who were known for their communal spirit during their lifetimes.
The town of Ubima, usually quiet, buzzed with life as a cavalcade of dignitaries, including political leaders, traditional rulers, and captains of industry, arrived to show solidarity with Sir Celestine Omehia.
The presence of such a distinguished assembly underscored the former Governor’s standing in the state’s socio-political fabric. Guests were later treated to a reception, where tributes were paid to the late Pa Cyprian and Madam Cecelia, describing them as pillars of the Omehia household whose values continue to guide their descendants.
The weekend’s events concluded with a sense of renewal, as the community benefited from the medical interventions while the Omehia family found solace in the collective honour bestowed upon their late parents.
