5 Players Of Nigerian Decent In England U21 Squad

Five players of Nigerian descent have been named in the latest England U21 squad announced by the English Football Association on Friday morning and four of the players were part of the Young Lions team that won the FIFA U20 World Cup in South Korea in the summer of 2017.

The five players called up by manager Aidy Boothroyd are Chelsea duo Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Josh Onomah, Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke and Everton’s Ademola Lookman.

Two Liverpool loanees in the shape of Ovie Ejaria and Sheyi Ojo will not join up with the England U21s for the first international break of the 2018-2019 season, while Manchester City loanee Lukas Nmecha misses out after an indifferent start to his career at Preston North End.

England U21s will play two European U21 Championship qualifiers against the Netherlands (September 6) and Latvia (September 11) next month.

In a similar development, Nigerian-born Club Brugge star, Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld has been named in the Netherlands U21s 27-man provisional squad list for the matches against England and Scotland and is in line to earn his fifth cap when they face the Young Lions at Carrow Road, Norwich.

He became provisionally cap-tied to the Netherlands after featuring in a Euro qualifier against Andorra U21s in March 2018.
