The once peaceful coastal city of Abonnema, in Akuku Toru Local Government Area, in Rivers State has been deserted, as thousands flee to neighboring communities for fear of the unknown.
This development according to a cross section of residents from the community who spoke with Africa Update, said two men with military camouflage ambushed military men on duty along Abonnema -Obonoma road, on March 2, 2019 killing two soldiers, while a third person was badly injured.
They disclosed that the incident has further heightened fears among the citizens who are afraid that military men might come for reprisal attacks over the killing of their colleagues.
You will recall that on February 23, during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, a second lieutenant of the 130 Brigade of the Nigerian Army was brutally killed by thugs allegedly sponsored by the Abonnema Local Government Council Chairman, Mr. Rowland Sekibo, who has been declared wanted by security operatives.
That attack had left over 30 persons dead and scores injured.
