One person has reportedly died, at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, in Rivers State, when an alleged disciplinary action by inmates went berserk. According to sources, trouble started when an inmate was reprimanded by fellow inmates for reportedly going against laid down cell rules.
It was gathered that during the fight at the correctional centre, at Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, on Monday, some of the inmates made attempts to escape from the facility and were injured in the process.
An inside source told Africa Update that trouble started when an inmate died as a result of a clash with a rival inmate.
According to the source, friends of the deceased inmates, who were aggrieved, staged a protest, wanting to carry out a reprisal before authorities stepped in, using teargas to calm the situation.
Some inmates had reportedly seized the opportunity of the unrest to attempt jailbreak by scaling the prison fence. Some of them sustained bullet wounds.
