All is now set for the kick off of the Governor Nyesom Wike Wrestling Championship in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The event which is scheduled to commence from November 23 to 30, will have about 600 wrestlers from 24 states.
Addresimg journalists ahead of the event, in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the Rivers State Commissioner for Sports and chairman of the local Organising committee, Mr. Boma Iyaye, said more states are expected to register for the championship.
Iyaye further stated that 90 medals are at stake, while cash rewards would be given to winners.
He disclosed that 90 wrestlers would represent Rivers at the event.
On his part, Alternate Chairman of the Media Sub-committee and President, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Honour Sirawoo, stated that the one-week event would hold at the Alfred Diete-Spiff Civic Centre and provide a template for the selection of representatives for the African \Wrestling Championship, which will be hosted by Rivers State in 2018.
Sirawo said the championship would be in three categories namely the cadet, junior and senior.
The rivers state police command through its police public relations officer, PPRO, Nnamdi Omoni, assured participants and organizers of adequate security.
