The former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has formally declared his motivation for contesting the 2027 presidential election, asserting that his vast experience and “track record” in public service uniquely qualify him to resolve the nation’s compounding crises.

Speaking during a televised interview monitored on Saturday, the former Rivers State Governor stated that his candidacy is born of a deep-seated conviction that he understands the fundamental challenges facing Nigeria better than his contemporaries.

“I don’t care who else is running. I’m running because I’m a Nigerian candidate. Because I know the Nigerian problem, and I can solve the Nigerian problem,” Mr Amaechi declared.

Defending his credentials, Mr Amaechi pointed to his tenure as Minister of Transportation as a blueprint for national development. He highlighted the significant expansion of the Nigerian rail network and the advancement of deep-sea port projects as tangible evidence of his capacity to deliver on critical infrastructure needs.

Furthermore, he asserted that his previous administrative roles involved successfully tackling regional insecurity, a performance he believes distinguishes him from other aspirants in the burgeoning 2027 race.

Now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr Amaechi did not mince words regarding the performance of the incumbent, President Bola Tinubu. He argued that the national economy has deteriorated sharply, leading to widespread domestic hardship.

“Everybody is suffering; everybody is looking for food to eat. People cannot buy fuel, they cannot travel. The airlines are threatening to increase costs; everything is skyrocketing,” he lamented.

Mr Amaechi specifically challenged the President on his campaign promises, particularly regarding the power sector. He noted that the President had previously invited Nigerians to judge him by his ability to provide electricity, adding, “Nigerians are waiting to vote him out.”

Beyond economic policy, the former Minister alleged that there are concerted efforts to undermine opposition forces ahead of the next general election. He stressed that the health of the nation’s democracy depends on the independence of its institutions.

“Whether it is free and fair or not, if we are on the ballot, President Bola Tinubu will lose the election,” Mr Amaechi claimed, further alleging that the current administration is wary of facing “strong candidates” at the polls.

Mr Amaechi’s entry into the fray adds further weight to a formidable list of opposition figures reportedly positioning themselves for the 2027 contest. Alongside Amaechi within the ADC and other platforms, the political landscape is expected to feature heavyweights such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir el-Rufai, and Rauf Aregbesola.

As the political season begins to take shape, Mr Amaechi’s “masterplan” appears focused on a platform of infrastructural competence and a direct challenge to the economic status quo.
