In a move that further cements the alliance between the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and the legislative faction loyal to him, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly on Saturday presented a brand-new 2025 Toyota Camry to Nyesom Wike.
The high-profile presentation took place during a festive ceremony in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, led by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule.
The atmosphere at the ceremony was one of camaraderie and unwavering loyalty. While handing over the keys to the luxury sedan, Speaker Amaewhule employed deeply personal language to describe the relationship between the lawmakers and the former governor.
“As part of Christmas, as part of the celebration, we brought a little token to mark this Christmas for the year 2025,” Amaewhule stated. He went on to urge Wike to view the lawmakers not just as political allies, but as family, referring to them as his “other children at the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters.”
Beyond the festive exchange, the Speaker’s remarks carried significant political weight, hinting at a long-term strategy as the state approaches the 2026 political cycle.
“By 2026, we will be waiting for you,” the Speaker told the Minister. “Your Excellency, now that you have started it, you won’t stop. Hopefully, our wives will save more money to buy a better gift [by then].”
Addressing the Minister’s well-known stature and resources, Amaewhule added with a smile: “We know that you have plenty already, but just add this one to the ones you already have.”
The gift serves as a potent symbol of the ongoing division within the Rivers State political landscape. By presenting the vehicle on behalf of the members, their spouses, and their children, the Amaewhule-led assembly is signaling a unified front behind Wike amidst the protracted legal and political battles with the state executive.
The choice of a 2025 model Toyota Camry, one of the newest vehicles on the market underscores the lawmakers’ commitment to maintaining their influence and visibility alongside their benefactor as the countdown to the 2026 political season begins.
As of the time of filing this report, the FCT Minister, known for his “Agreement is Agreement” stance, has accepted the gesture, further solidifying his grip on the grassroots political structure of the state despite his primary assignment in Abuja.
