Even by his own loquacious standards for verbal diarrhea, the misguided verbal ejaculation of the governor-elect of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule against his first wife, Hajia Silifa Sule was a fundamental lack of expression, which set a new low, in what, unfortunately, has become the unedifying trademark of the talkative incoming governor. Before God, man, and country, Sule declared that his wife of many years was not qualified to be the First Lady of Nasarawa State because she was illiterate and cannot speak good English or speaks her own English language mostly in the past tense. This constant barrage of indecorous verbiage is unbecoming of the incoming governor and it was time someone reminded him to respect his office and status, and allow decorum to edify the public space.
Huhuonline.com has learnt from sources in Nasarawa State that while Abdullahi Sule was trying to reach the people of the state with his campaign message, his wife served as a willing loudspeaker that helped to mobilize the masses for the cause. Campaigning in her native language, she mobilized massive support from the womenfolk; a majority of who are not educated, but easily identified and saw her as one of their own, who will be in a position to present their problems to her husband; at least within the close confines of her bedroom.
The women, who constituted a majority of the electorate answered the call of Hajia Silifa and trooped en masse to vote for her husband, who won the election. And now that it is time for her to reap the fruits of her labor, someone else has jumped the queue and slammed the door in her face. Don’t ask what crime she committed because her husband has told everyone who cares to listen that Hajia Silifa is not educate and therefore lacks the capacity and sophistication to fulfill the responsibilities and meet the challenges of a modern first lady.
Close sources to the incoming governor however told Huhuonline.com on conditions of anonymity that Abdullahi Sule is looking for excuses and merely trying to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it. They disclosed that that the governor-elect, renowned for his libidinal eccentricities, had been dating his new damsel, Hajia Farida for a long time but could not come up with a good enough reason to justify bringing her in as a second wife. Now that he has become a state executive, he claims his first wife’s inability to communicate in English will prove a hindrance to the smooth discharge of the duties of a first lady.
Hence he used the excuse to wed Hajia Farida at lavish ceremony on April 19 in Katsina. Already, there are indications that the governor-elect has instructed some of his close aides and associates to begin referring to the new wife as the first lady, notwithstanding the fact that she played no role in his election as governor, even as it is being rumored that she might have supported Abdullahi Sule’s opponent, due to some undisclosed family ties.
Though the governor-elect has come out to publicly deny that he is trying to shortchange his first wife; his body language and his non-denial denial over the issue, is fueling speculations that rumors of a planned division of labor in which the incoming governor will use his first wife for window-dressing to placate and not antagonize his electoral base, especially the women whom he will need to vote again for him in 2023; while the new wife, Hajia Farida will be the official ceremonial wife wielding de facto power in the office of the Nasarawa first lady.
Despite the strong criticism which hasn’t stopped rushing his way in a never-ending wave, Sule doesn’t give a damn as he savors the sweet taste of political and romantic conquests. In contrast, the long suffering Hajia Silifa feels betrayed. She silently gnashes her teeth while maintaining outward support for her errant husband. As the people of Nasarawa State wait for their new governor, they most likely will spare a thought for the first wife of incoming governor, Hajia Silifa Sule. These days, she feels like a used toothpaste squeezed of most of its content and then discarded for the shiny new mouthwash in town. Despite the huge role she played in her husband’s emergence as the successor to the senate-bound Tanko Al Makura, Hajia Silifa has been left by the wayside as a new wife openly waltzed into her matrimonial home.
