The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has directed the immediate suspension of the Comptrollers overseeing the Lagos-Seme border corridor. The directive comes as part of a high-level inquiry into allegations of systemic extortion by personnel stationed along that critical frontier.

The investigation was formalised following a series of distressing online reports detailing widespread financial impropriety by officers. In a statement released on Wednesday by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Akinsola Akinlabi, the Comptroller General expressed her unequivocal condemnation of the reported acts.

Describing the alleged conduct as “unacceptable,” Madam Nandap asserted that such actions are fundamentally at odds with the established standards, core values, and operational ethics of the Service.

“The reported incidents violate the very operational guidelines we have sworn to uphold,” the Comptroller General stated. “The Service has, therefore, taken immediate measures by temporarily relieving the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties to ensure an unfettered investigation.”

In addition to the suspensions, the NIS boss has ordered a thorough and exhaustive probe to identify every member of staff involved in the alleged racketeering. She issued a stern warning that appropriate disciplinary measures would be applied swiftly and decisively to any officer found wanting, regardless of rank.

Madam Nandap sought to reassure the Nigerian public and the international community of the Service’s steadfast commitment to transparency, professionalism, and efficiency at all entry and exit points across the Federation. She emphasised that the NIS would not permit any conduct capable of eroding public confidence or compromising the institution’s integrity.

As part of a broader strategy to enhance internal oversight and service delivery, the NIS has invited members of the public to report instances of misconduct directly. Citizens are encouraged to utilise the Service’s official communication channels, including its 24-hour contact centres and social media platforms.

The Comptroller General reaffirmed the Service’s mandate to facilitate lawful migration while maintaining the highest levels of discipline and integrity. She noted that the current administrative actions are vital to ensuring that the Lagos-Seme corridor, and indeed all Nigerian borders operate in strict accordance with international best practices.
