Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reappointed His Majesty, Eze Sergeant Chidi Awuse, as Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, in a move seen as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate reconciliation following the state’s prolonged political crisis.
The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was announced in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma.
The statement reads: “His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, the Governor of Rivers State, has approved the appointment of His Majesty, Eze (Sir) Sergeant Chidi Awuse, DSSRS, JP, Nne-Nwe-Eli, Emohua, XIII (Olo IV), as the Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers. The appointment takes immediate effect.”
Awuse, the Nne-Nwe-Eli of Emohua, was removed from the position by Governor Fubara on 21 June 2024, at the height of the political crisis that engulfed the state. He was subsequently replaced by the Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, His Majesty, Eze Chike Worlu Wodo.
Awuse is regarded as a political ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose political differences with Governor Fubara contributed to the crisis that divided the state’s political leadership.
His return to the traditional rulers’ council leadership comes amid renewed reconciliation efforts and moves to address lingering divisions arising from the political dispute.
The reappointment is expected to restore Awuse to a prominent role in the state’s traditional institution as the government continues efforts to strengthen peace and cooperation among stakeholders.
