Abuja, FCT – Former Minister of Transportation and erstwhile Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has publicly accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of failing the Nigerian populace. Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Mr. Amaechi indicated his readiness to join a coalition aimed at challenging the current government in the 2027 general elections.

Despite his affiliation with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Amaechi asserted his commitment to speaking truth to power. He stated that party membership does not necessitate blind support for a government perceived to be underperforming. “If the government is failing the country, you don’t just go along because you’re in the same party. You know that’s not right,” he articulated.

The former minister specifically criticized the Tinubu administration, alleging that its policies have exacerbated economic hardship across Nigeria. He emphasized the severe impact of the current economic conditions on citizens, stating, “People are dying. People are starving. I myself am feeling the effects of hunger.”

Mr. Amaechi is widely considered to be a key figure in the nascent opposition coalition reportedly forming to contest the 2027 presidential election. His recent 60th birthday celebration in Abuja was notably attended by prominent leaders associated with this potential coalition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. During the event, Amaechi, Abubakar, and El-Rufai collectively accused the Tinubu administration of “weaponizing poverty” in Nigeria.
