A profound sense of unease has gripped the Aluu community in Ikwerre Local Government Area following the brutal killing of two police officers by unidentified gunmen on Monday evening.

The officers, who were attached to the Aluu Divisional Police Station, were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation at a security checkpoint along the Mbodo-Aluu axis of the Obiri Ikwerre Road when the assailants struck at approximately 9:00 p.m.

The harrowing aftermath of the attack has surfaced in a widely circulated video on social media, which depicts the uniformed officers lying lifeless in pools of blood at the scene of the shooting.

During a visit to the site on Tuesday, it was evident that the community remains on edge. Local residents and business owners, likely fearing reprisal, were hesitant to discuss the details of the incident, and the specific motive behind the targeted attack remains unclear.

In response to the tragedy, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, led a delegation of the Command’s management team to the location on Tuesday morning to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the crime scene.

Speaking to our correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed that the Command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. She indicated that a comprehensive official statement will be released in due course as the investigation progresses.

The attack marks a significant security breach in the area, and local stakeholders are now calling for heightened vigilance and an immediate thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
