The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Benue State Chapter, has condemned the reported killing of its Fiidi Council Ward Chairman in Makurdi Local Government Area, Igbu Terhemen.
Terhemen was reportedly attacked by suspected hoodlums and later found unconscious near his residence around the NNPC Depot along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem, the attackers allegedly tied Terhemen with ropes and injected him with substances suspected to be poisonous before abandoning him.
The party said he was later found in an almost unconscious state and unable to speak or communicate before he died.
Reports from people familiar with the incident indicated that Terhemen had left his residence on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area of Makurdi but did not return home. Family members and friends subsequently began searching for him before he was reportedly discovered in a bush near his residence in the early hours of Wednesday.
Reacting to the incident, the NDC State Chairman, Ohini Ojegbe, described the killing as a “broad-daylight evil” and called for an urgent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Terhemen’s death.
Ojegbe urged security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The party described Terhemen as a committed and dedicated member whose contributions to the growth of the NDC would be greatly missed.
The NDC also expressed condolences to his immediate family, the Fiidi community and members of the party, praying for strength and comfort for those affected by the loss.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command was reported to have said it had not received a formal report of the incident as of Wednesday.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identity and motive of the assailants and the nature of the substance allegedly administered to Terhemen, remain subject to investigation.
