A wave of apprehension has swept through Omoku, the administrative headquarters of the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA), following the brutal killing of Comrade Ifeanyi Azuazu, President of the Omoku Youth Federation, and his personal aide, Mr Chigozie Oluwu.
The harrowing incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, 5 February 2026, at approximately 6:00 pm. Reports indicate that a gang of seven gunmen, suspected to be members of a cult group, arrived in two vehicles at a popular social establishment situated on Ogolo Street, just off Palace Road.
According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants targeted the Youth President immediately upon arrival. When the gunmen attempted to force Comrade Azuazu into one of their vehicles at gunpoint, his aide, Mr Oluwu, courageously intervened. In the ensuing confrontation, the gunmen opened fire, killing Mr Oluwu instantly before successfully abducting the Youth President.
The audacity of the attack caused widespread pandemonium in the vicinity. Passers-by and local residents were forced to flee for safety, while business owners in the commercial hub hurriedly shuttered their premises to avoid the violence.
Following the abduction, a search was launched by the ONELGA Security and Planning Advisory Committee (OSPAC). On the afternoon of Friday, 6 February, OSPAC operatives discovered the lifeless and decapitated remains of Comrade Azuazu in a forested area on the outskirts of Omoku.
Confirming the grim discovery via a telephone interview, the Spokesperson for OSPAC in ONELGA, Mr Godnews Nkem, stated that while Mr Oluwu was fatally shot during the initial assault, the Youth President’s body was recovered hours later following his abduction. Mr Nkem urged the residents of Omoku to maintain their composure and allow the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Public Relations Officer for the Rivers State Police Command, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the sequence of events, including the murder of Mr Oluwu and the subsequent discovery of the beheaded body of Comrade Azuazu.
CSP Iringe-Koko further asserted that preliminary findings suggest the killings are cult-related. She noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter, vowing that the command will spare no effort in apprehending those responsible for these heinous acts.
As of Friday evening, a somber atmosphere remains over Omoku, with security patrols reportedly intensified to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
