Rivers Rape Case: Women Stage Protest, Lawyers Call For Special Court Trial

Reactions continue to trial the news of a 9 year girl who was raped to death in Bori, Khana local government area, Rivers State as women embark on protest.

Women in the state have taken to the streets of Port Harcourt, the state capital to protest against the defilement and killing of a 9 year old girl in Bori.

The protesters who carried placards bearing different inscriptions such as; ‘stop rape’, ‘stop violence against women’, took the match to the River State Government House in Port Harcourt to air out their grievances. From there, they moved to the headquarters of the Rivers State Police command.

Aside lending their voices against rape, the protesters also demanded that justice be served for the family of a middle age woman who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband last week in Ahoada east LGA.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the protesters said, “We are asking for justice. It is high time women came out to fight for their fellow women. The world is already too rude to women. The world is too cruel to women. The world is not fair to the girl child. So, it is time for women to speak out. To speak against domestic violence. Speak against child abuse. Today, we are saying ‘no more to child abuse’ , ‘no more to rape’. People found wanting in such acts should be dealt with”.

 

In the meantime, lawyers in Rivers state have condemned the action and are calling for the establishment of a special court presiding over rape cases in the state.

A cross section of lawyers in the state said this,following the defilement and killing of a 9 year old in Bori, Khana local government.

They stated that with proper legal backing, the justice system can be fast tracked for easy prosecution of perpetrators of rape.
