The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof. Bem Angwe has expressed shock at the number of unclaimed corpse at hospital morgues across the country and appealed to Nigerians, to desist from abandoning the remains of their relations.
Speaking while on a working visit to the Garki Hospital Abuja on Saturday, he said it was imperative for family members of the deceased to pay their last respect to their dead relatives by giving them decent burial, and commended the management of the hospital for their philanthropy.
Prof. Angwe urged the Federal Government and well meaning Nigerians to make conscious efforts to upgrade the quality of health care delivery system in the country.
In his remark, the Group Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Elijah Miner disclosed that the hospital has secured a court warrant to enable it bury the remains of 22 corpses, which include 2 infants and headless bomb blast victims. According to him, some of the bodies have been abandoned for five years.
Dr. Miner stated that newspaper publications which displayed some information about the corpses could not help trace the relatives of the deceased, which has compelled the hospital to apply for a court warrant to enable it decongest the morgue.
