Man remanded in court for buying beer with counterfeit

The police on Monday arraigned a 24-year-old applicant, Shehu Umaru, at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged threat to life and being in possession of fake currency.

The defendant, a resident of Oko Oba in Agege, was arraigned on a four-count-charge of breach of peace, threat to life, unlawful damage and spending counterfeit currency.

NAN reports that the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Patrick Ebri, said the defendant allegedly conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace when he damaged the entrance to the complainant’s bar, one Mr Felix Ayoola, over a disagreement.

Ebri alleged that the defendant committed the offences on Oct. 4 at about 5.00 a.m. on Abattoir Railway Line, Oko Oba, Agege, a Lagos suburb.

He told the court that the defendant, who was suspected to have acted under the influence of alcohol, approached the complainant for a bottle of beer which he obliged him.

He alleged that the defendant later ordered for another bottle, but paid with a N1,000 counterfeit note.

“The complainant rejected the fake money and demanded for his beer money but the defendant brought out a dagger from his pocket and threatened to stab the complainant.

“He also damaged the entrance to the bar worth N50,000,” the prosecutor said.

He said the alleged offences contravened Sections 56, 168, 320 and 339 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Fajana, granted the defendant N10,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Fajana ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

The Magistrate adjourned the case until Oct. 30, for mention.
