The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has formalised its intent to collaborate with the Republic of Finland to advance infrastructure development, agricultural productivity, and sustainable urban management within the nation’s capital.

The FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, announced the proposed partnership on Tuesday during a courtesy visit from the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, Her Excellency Sanna Selin. The dialogue underscored a shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations and exploring technical synergies aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Highlighting Abuja’s rapid expansion, Mr Wike noted that the FCT is currently undergoing a significant transformation through various large-scale construction projects. He expressed a keen interest in leveraging Finland’s globally recognised expertise in specialised sectors to ensure this growth remains sustainable.

“As a city, we are willing to cooperate with cities in other countries to see how we can partner in infrastructure and agriculture,” the Minister stated. “You have already indicated your willingness to support infrastructure development, smart city technology, and green energy. We are very willing to partner with you in these areas.”

A primary focus of the discussion was the modernisation of the FCT’s waste management systems. Mr Wike extended an invitation to competent Finnish firms to engage with the administration, identifying effective waste processing as a “key” priority for the capital’s environmental health.

In her remarks, Ambassador Selin affirmed that relations between Finland and Nigeria have strengthened considerably in recent months, particularly following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on digitalisation and innovation.

“Finland is one of the most digitised countries in the world,” Ambassador Selin remarked. “We are also very advanced in water and waste management technologies, as well as circular economy solutions.”

Addressing the diplomatic community, the Minister offered assurances regarding the improved security situation within the FCT. He emphasised that the administration remains steadfast in its commitment to providing a safe and conducive environment for international partners and foreign direct investment.
