Rivers State Govt might ban commercial buses, taxis this weekend

The fate of commercial bus and taxi operators now hang in the balance, as the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has stated that whether they will continue to operate or not will be decided in the next 48 hours.

Speaking on the achievements recorded so far, in curbing the spread of the coronavirus in the state, on May 1, 2020, Wike, frowned at the disregard for the need for social distancing by commercial transport operators.

He noted that the state security council will meet in the next 48 hours, to take a definite decision on whether public buses and taxis will be banned.

Stating that the manner passengers are conveyed in such commercial vehicles, could compromise the efforts of the state government in ensuring that the spread of the pandemic is curtailed in the state.

Wike observed that the safety of rivers citizens is more important than momentary gains.
