The Senatorial Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally lost the Kogi West senatorial seat to Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeyemi reclaimed his position as Kogi West senator at the end of the Saturday, November 30 supplementary election in the senatorial district, after he was declared the winner by Olayinde Lawal, the returning officer of the election.
Results announced by Lawal showed Adeyemi polled a total of 88,373 votes to defeat Melaye, his closest challenger, who polled 62,133 votes.
According to Lawal, there were 161,979 accredited voters out of the 432,515 registered. He said 152,033 votes were valid out of the 155,253 cast, while 3,250 were rejected.
The supplementary election came after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the November 15, rerun election in Kogi West inconclusive.
In 2015 Melaye had defeated Adeyemi the Senator who represented Kogi West Senatorial District He also defeated him during the 2019 general election. However, his victory was annulled by the Appeal Court which ordered for a rerun poll in the district.
Melaye has since cried foul over the conduct of the election and had vowed to challenge the outcome of the exercise in court.
