A bill on street hawking has scaled its first reading on floor of the rivers state house of assembly. Despite the warning by the state government against street hawking , most artisans continue to display their wares unabated.
The 21 days ultimatum by the government expired yesterday. Although there is compliance in some areas like Aba-express road , Bishop Okoye street, while some artisans are seen hawking at the spare parts side along the Olu-obasanjo road.
A cross section of hawkers decried the move by the state government to rid the street of hawking without providing an alternative market for them to sample their wares; while seeking assistance from the government to cope with the present situation .
The bill known as the Rivers State Street Trading Illegal Markets and Motor Park Prohibition Bill 2019 followed a letter by the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to the state house of assembly.
The Speaker of the house Ikuinyi O. Ibani said the bill is designed to prohibit all forms of street trading, illegal hawking and motor parks to ensure sanity in the state .
The house has also deferred for the third time the reports of ad hoc committee on sea piracy and bile passenger boats to the next legislative seating scheduled for Thursday 25th, July 2019.
