Rivers State: Speaker, Five others adjourn State Assembly indefinitely

– Mannah describes sitting as illegal

Six lawmakers have moved for the indefinite adjournment of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Africa Update gathered that those present at the sitting yesterday, Tuesday, September 25, when the adjournment was made include, the speaker, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi Owaji Ibani, the deputy speaker, Marshall Uwom. Hon. Sam Ogeh. Michael Chinda, Enemi George and Christian Ihiakwo.

The house also deferred debate on the Rivers state college of health sciences and management technology bill, sponsored by Hon. Michael Chinda.

While speaking after plenary, the house committee chairman on information and training, Hon. Sam Ogeh attributed the low turn out of law makers to the political activities in the state, which he said many of the members are engaged in. ” After today’s sitting, Mr. Speaker reasoned that there are lots of activities going on in the state now which has kept a lot of members busy. So, the speaker and the chair, considered that it is necessary to adjourn indefinitely to allow members attend to political activities going on. Then, possibly resume anytime that is possible”, he said.

The lawmakers representing Ahoada East constituency 1, Martyns Mannah said the house did not give proper information before constituting the sitting. He also said the act of the house is illegal. He stated, ”you cannot say the house sat because in the first place, they couldn’t form a forum to enable them sit, as a result, the house did not sit today. Members are beginning to get uninterested in the assembly issue, because they have made the assembly so uninteresting, members are beginning to get very weak and less concerned about I’d there’s any business’.
