The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has inaugurated a 600-member governorship campaign council ahead of the 2027 general election, pledging to pursue a peaceful, issue-based campaign across the state’s 23 local government areas.
The party also pledged to promote inclusive governance, restore stability and uphold the constitutional independence of the executive, legislature and judiciary.
The Chairman of the ADC Governorship Campaign Council, Senator Andrew Uchendu, made the declaration on Monday in Port Harcourt during the inauguration of the council.
Uchendu, who attributed the state’s developmental challenges to persistent political conflicts among its leaders, alleged that the ongoing crisis had undermined governance and deprived residents of essential public services.
He lamented the state of healthcare and education, claiming that public hospitals built by previous administrations had been neglected, while schools lacked adequate facilities for pupils.
“While godfathers wage private wars of ego in Abuja and Port Harcourt, governance in Rivers State has been completely abandoned,” he said.
Uchendu further argued that Rivers State’s natural resource wealth had not translated into improved living conditions for its residents, citing inadequate electricity, poor roads and limited access to clean water.
He said the ADC intended to address these concerns by rebuilding public institutions and ensuring that elected officials discharged their constitutional responsibilities in the interest of the people.
“That is why ADC is here. We want a state where the legislature will do their work, the executive will do their work, the judiciary will do their work. On behalf of the people, not on behalf of themselves,” he stated.
The campaign council chairman urged members to take the party’s message to communities across the state, stressing the need to unite residents across ethnic and political divides.
“Our task is clear. We must rescue what we have before, that has been lost. We must recover and rebuild our state for ourselves and our children yet more,” he said.
Uchendu also charged members to conduct a non-violent, issue-based campaign focused on the concerns of ordinary citizens rather than divisive political rhetoric.
He emphasised that the party would seek to build a government that was fair and inclusive, while calling on the campaign council to mobilise support across all 23 local government areas.
Earlier, the Rivers State ADC Chairman, Dr Chukwudi Dimkpa, formally inaugurated the council and charged its members to carry out their duties with diligence, discipline and accountability.
Dimkpa said the council comprised the party’s leadership, directorates, departments and other members, adding that its operations must comply with the ADC constitution, approved terms of reference and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Having duly presented the leadership, directorates, departments, and membership of the Rivers State 2027 Governorship Campaign Council, and acting in my capacity as the state chairman of the ADC Rivers State, I hereby formally inaugurate the campaign council,” he declared.
The state chairman formally handed over responsibility for coordinating and executing the party’s governorship campaign to the council, led by Uchendu as chairman and Hon. Chimbiko Akarolo as Director-General.
He, however, clarified that the council would operate under the overall authority and policy direction of the state party leadership.
Dimkpa charged members to work as a united, disciplined and results-oriented team, expressing the expectation that they would execute their responsibilities in accordance with the party’s guidelines and applicable laws.
The inauguration marks the commencement of the ADC’s campaign organisational activities in Rivers State as political parties prepare for the 2027 general election.
