Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57, leaving colleagues, friends and fans mourning the loss of one of Nigeria’s celebrated screen performers.
A family source said Duru died at about 10 p.m. on Thursday at the National Hospital Abuja (NHA). The actor is survived by his wife and two children.
News of his death was received with sadness across the Nigerian film industry, with tributes highlighting his versatility, creativity and contributions to Nollywood through decades of acting.
Veteran actor Kanayo O. Kanayo was among those who mourned Duru, describing him as one of the most versatile and prolific performers Nigeria had produced.
“A consummate actor has left the stage,” Kanayo wrote on his Instagram page.
“One of the most flexible, prolific performers Nigeria ever produced. Rest in peace my brother.”
Duru was widely recognised for his ability to interpret diverse roles convincingly, earning a reputation as a gifted performer in the Nigerian film industry.
Among his notable works was Rattle Snake, in which he played Ahanna, as well as One Chance. His performances in numerous productions helped establish his place among Nollywood’s familiar faces.
His death comes amid renewed mourning in the film industry following the loss of other celebrated actors, including Olu Jacobs, whose passing was reported five weeks earlier.
Duru’s death also comes two years after the actor suffered the painful loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi.
In August 2024, the actor announced his son’s death, describing him affectionately as a “champ” and a “lion” who fought fearlessly.
The loss drew sympathy from colleagues and admirers, many of whom offered messages of support to the actor and his family.
Duru’s passing marks another loss for Nollywood, with colleagues and fans remembering him for his talent, versatility and enduring contribution to Nigerian cinema.
