A prominent stakeholder and relative of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Blessing Fubara Snr, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The high-profile defection was formalised in Abuja, where Mr Fubara was received by a delegation of party stalwarts led by the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Seriake Dickson, alongside other key stakeholders of the NDC.

Speaking on the motivations behind his departure from the APC, Mr Fubara cited a moral and political obligation to safeguard the interests of his home state. He noted that the intensifying political friction within the region necessitated a change in platform to ensure stability and progress.

“The soul of Rivers State is at stake,” Mr Fubara declared during the reception. He emphasised that his decision was driven by the urgent need to “protect the soul of Rivers State” amidst the heightening tensions and complex power dynamics preceding the 2027 general elections.

The move by a close associate and kinsman of the incumbent Governor is being viewed by analysts as a calculated maneuver in the broader struggle for political supremacy in the oil-rich state.

Whilst the defection was conducted in the federal capital, its reverberations are being felt acutely in Port Harcourt. Political observers suggest that this transition is a clear indicator of the “shifting political calculations” occurring behind the scenes as various factions move to consolidate their positions ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The NDC, bolstered by this latest acquisition, appears to be positioning itself as a primary alternative for those seeking a departure from the current internal crises within the state’s other major political formations. This defection is expected to trigger further cross-carpeting as the countdown to 2027 begins in earnest.
