Eva Magdalena Andersson is a Swedish Social Democratic politician who has been serving as the leader of the Social Democratic Party since 4 November 2021.
On November 24, 2021, Magdalena Andersson was elected by the Riiksdag as Sweden’s Prime Minister and she took office on November 26.
However, hours after being tapped in as Sweden’s first female Prime Minister, Magdalena Andersson resigned.
Magdalena Andersson resigned after suffering a budget defeat in parliament and her coalition partner left the two-party minority government.
The government’s own budget proposal was rejected in favour of one presented by the opposition that includes the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats. Sweden’s third largest party is rooted in a neo-Nazi movement. The vote was 154-143 in favour of the opposition’s budget proposal.
”For me, it is about respect, but I also do not want to lead a government where there may be grounds to question its legitimacy,” Andersson said at a news conference.
However, Andersson informed parliamentary Speaker Anderas Norlen that she remains interested in leading a Social Democratic one-party government.
