The pronouncement made by the Chairman, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on the fate of the National Assembly candidates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State, is still eliciting reactions.
A Press statement released by the South South Zonal Secretary of the party, David Okumgba, yesterday, February 20, called on members of the party to remain steadfast and ‘show utmost faith in the leadership’.
Excerpts of the Press statement reads: ‘Following the recent position of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, on Rivers State APC, I wish to call on all Party faithfuls to remain committed and show utmost faith in the leadership of the Party.
‘While I admit that these are turbulent times for the Party, I urge our teeming supporters not to loose their cool as the Leadership of the Party under the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, will provide further direction and guidance on necessary actions.
‘Sadly, INEC through its Chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud has shown open bias by refusing to obey a valid order of the Appeal Court to stay execution on the federal high court judgment that ordered it to delist the candidates of Rivers APC from the 2019 ballot.
‘This unholy alliance and collusion of the INEC Chairman, leaves the ability of the Commission to conduct free and credible polls in doubt. Nonetheless, I implore everyone to remain calm and hopeful as justice will surely prevail in the end’.
