The need for youths to shun acts of criminality was at the center of the ‘Safer Schools Initiative Program” organized by the Police Community Relations Committee, (PCRC), Rivers State Command, in Port Harcourt recently.
Addressing youths, security operatives and prominent citizens, the chairman PCRC, Chief Casca Ogosu JP, stated that the safer school initiative program, which would be launched in the three senatorial districts, is aimed at mentoring youths on the need to stay away from drugs and crime.
He said, ‘we have taken time to choose speakers and experts in relationship management, crime prevention and narcotics, which is the bane of our society today.
‘We are all aware of the upsurge in the crime rate in our state, being perpetuated by our youth which has become worrisome.
‘Incidences of kidnapping, assassination, robbery, pipeline vandalisation, ritual murder, illegal refining of petroleum products, drug addiction, etc abound currently in our communities.
‘statistics has shown that at the rate which crime is growing in our society, we may come to total extinction in the near future if something urgent is not done now to control and possibly stop it’.
He commended the state governor, Nyesom Wike and the police commissioner, Zaki Ahmed, for their determination to eliminate crime in the state.
In their various speeches, the police boss, CP Zaki Ahmed, Chairman Board of Fellows NIPR, Mr. Frank Tamuno-Okoko (FNIPR), State Commander NDLEA, Rivers State Command, Amb. Rachael Shelleng (JP), reiterated the dangers in drug abuse and crime.
They urged youths to imbibe good behavior that would ensure a brighter and more fulfilling future for them.
Highpoint of the event was the distribution of books to selected schools and the presentation of award of excellence to the Vice Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, Prof Ndowa Ekoate Sunday Lale, Chairman Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, Chief David Briggs.
