Provosts in Colleges of Health Sciences: Rivers Lawmakers propose new bill to establish stricter qualifications

Lawmakers have passed the State College of Health Science and Management Technology Bill 2023, seeking to amend the Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology Law of 2019.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, amended section 56(c) of the Principal Law and restricted the category of persons to be appointed as Provost of the College to only those with the requisite academic qualifications of a Doctoral Degree in Health Sciences and Allied Professions.

Speaking after the debate, Africa Update reports that the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, said the amendment aims to encourage professionalism, expertise, efficiency, and academic excellence.

The House agreed that a Doctoral Degree is not to be seen as an Honorary Degree in the Health Sciences or any Allied Profession or Discipline from a recognized Academic Institution. The House adjourned sitting till Thursday, July 6, 2023.
