The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, has formally responded to a viral publication critical of the institution’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Okey Onuchukwu.
In a statement signed by the SUG President, Reverend Comrade Alex Inyeaka Nnodim Onu, the union sought to provide “clarification and balance” to claims made in a document titled “From Prolonged Acting to Public Decline: Why Prof. Okey Onuchukwu’s Record Must Be Scrutinized.”
Holistic Evaluation of Leadership
While acknowledging the right of alumni and stakeholders to express their opinions, the SUG insisted that leadership must be evaluated through a holistic lens. The union highlighted the “notable innovations and developmental strides” achieved under Professor Onuchukwu’s stewardship. Specifically, the statement pointed to the ongoing construction at the ‘New Heaven’ site, where faculty buildings and administrative structures serve as tangible evidence of infrastructural progress.
Academic Excellence and Governance
The union robustly dismissed assertions that academic standards had declined. According to the SUG, academic and administrative governance remains “functional and effective,” with Deans and Heads of Departments discharging their duties with diligence. The statement argued that the narrative of a collapse in academic excellence does not align with the daily experiences of the students and staff.
Security and Student Welfare
Addressing concerns regarding campus security and the involvement of external groups such as OSPAC, the SUG clarified that such collaborations are proactive responses to broader societal challenges rather than an admission of internal failure. They noted that similar security measures are common in neighbouring institutions like the Rivers State University (RSU) and the University of Port Harcourt.
Furthermore, the union lauded the administration for its restraint regarding student finances. “It is on record that under Prof. Okey Onuchukwu’s leadership, there has been no arbitrary increment in fees or financial exploitation of students, despite prevailing economic pressures nationwide,” the President noted. The report also cited recent renovations to student hostels as evidence that welfare remains a primary concern for the university management.
A Call for Verifiable Facts
Describing Professor Onuchukwu as a “globally renowned scholar,” the SUG cautioned the public against accepting “unsubstantiated claims or politically motivated narratives.” While conceding that no administration is devoid of challenges, the union praised the Vice-Chancellor’s “listening leadership style” and collaborative approach.
The statement concluded with a call for constructive criticism based on “verifiable facts” rather than personal attacks, reaffirming the SUG’s commitment to supporting any administration dedicated to the stability and progress of the University.
