The State Executive of National Council for Women Societies, NCWS, Rivers State Branch, met with the Mayor of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Sir Allwell Ihunda, DSSRS JP, on July 4, to discuss ways of fostering a cordial relationship.
The State President, Princess Jetiba Soberekon thanked the Mayor for giving the Organisation the opportunity to interact with him.
She said NCWS, being the umbrella body of all women organizations in Nigeria, was set up to provide a platform for women to seek for inclusiveness in the social, economic and political sectors.
Princess Soberekon solicited for financial support from the Mayor while appealing that the organization be incorporated in the activities of the various LGAs in the State .
In his remarks, the Mayor of Port Harcourt City, said the empowerment of women is top priority to his administration.
He noted that his administration’s disposition towards women inclusivity is reflected even in the choice of the Vice Chairman and a good number of other women who are occupying key positions in his administration.
Stressing that his inspiration on issues of women inclusivity and empowerment is drawn from the gender friendly stance of the Rivers State Government.
“Here in our LGA, we have women that are councillors, we have done a lot in terms of empowerment programmes in which women are huge beneficiaries.
“The various skills acquisition programmes we have engaged in so far since we assumed office two years ago has been able to empower over 500 women,” he disclosed.
Mayor assured them of his support, particularly for the activities of the PHALGA branch of the organization.
Vice President Rivers West Senatorial District, Hon. Gloria Boma Harry, Secretary of the State NCWS, Bar. Mrs Ibiso Briggs, Assistant Secretary, Bar. Mrs. Emi George, Assistant Secretary One, Hon. Mrs. Pat Oye, Assistant Secretary Two, Hon. Abiotonwa Sanipe, Financial Secretary, Mrs. Rita Jumbo, Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Doris Ngofa, Research Coordinator, Mrs. Suka Timothy, and representatives of 8 Local Government Areas were part of the visit.
