Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Dele Alli, widely regarded as one of the club’s most beloved figures of the modern era, will return to N17 this weekend. The former England international is set to appear as a special guest during Sunday’s highly anticipated North London derby against Arsenal.
The club announced that Dele will be interviewed pitchside by presenter Paul Coyle during the half-time interval. His appearance continues a recent tradition of honouring stalwarts from the celebrated Mauricio Pochettino era; Jan Vertonghen was recently paraded before the supporters, and former captain Heung-min Son made an emotional return during the club’s Champions League victory over Slavia Prague following his summer departure.
During a glittering seven-year tenure with the Lilywhites, Dele was instrumental in the club’s most significant successes. Playing alongside icons such as Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, and Son, he amassed an impressive 67 goals in 269 appearances. Since leaving Spurs in early 2022, the midfielder has had stints with Everton and Beşiktaş, most recently departing Como. He currently remains a free agent.
The timing of Dele’s return coincides with a period of significant upheaval for the club. Sunday’s derby marks the first match under the stewardship of new manager Igor Tudor, who was recently appointed following the dismissal of Thomas Frank.
Tudor inherits a side embroiled in a precarious relegation battle. Tottenham currently find themselves in desperate need of points, sitting just two points clear of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest and five points ahead of West Ham United in the drop zone.
While the return of a modern-day legend will undoubtedly provide a sentimental lift to the home crowd, the primary focus remains on the pitch. The club hopes that Dele’s presence can inspire a performance capable of securing the vital points needed to ensure their top-flight survival.
