Nigeria’s Alice Folashade Oluwafemiayo has clinched Gold in the final of the women’s Para-Powerlifting (Heavyweight) event in the ongoing XXII Commonwealth Games holding in Birmingham.

With a body weight of 85.30kg and Rack (10), she had a combined total of 123.4kg(130/150/155) to clinch Gold and set a New World Record and Commonwealth Games Record.

She displaced compatriot, Bose Patricia Omolayo with body weight, 77.60kg and Rack(13) who had a combined 115.2kg(125/142/-) to clinch Silver. Australia’s Hani Watson clinched Bronze (98.5kg).

Oluwafemiayo is the reigning Olympic Champion in the 86kg category while Omolayo, the reigning Olympic Champion in the 79kg category.

Meanwhile, Goodness Chiemerie Nwachukwu has clinched Gold in the final of the women’s Discus Throw F42-44/61-64 event.The 23-year-old threw 34.84m to set a new World Record in her first attempt, then threw 36.56m in her second attempt to eclipse her previous world record.She came close to smashing another with a 36.31m and 36.38m in her 3rd and 5th attempts respectively.However, her second attempt (36.56m) did the job to produce Gold in style.Australia’s Sarah Edmiston (Silver: 34.96m) and Fiji’s Naibili Vatunisolo (Bronze: 23.70m) also scored podium finishes.

Similarly, Innocent Nnamdi has clinched Bronze in the final of the men’s Lightweight in the Para-Powerlifting event. Nnamdi weighing 70.6kg and a Rack of 11, lifted 190, resulting in a combined 132.5kg.

That was enough for Nnamdi to claim Bronze ahead of compatriot, Thomas Kure who placed 4th.

Malaysia’s Bonnie Bunyau Gustin (Commonwealth Games Record – Gold: 154.6) and England’s Mark Swan (Silver: 145.5kg) also scored podium finishes.
