Proprietors of private schools have called on government at all levels to eliminate multiple taxation, Â which has placed constraint on the operation of these schools.
The call was made by the National President of National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, NAPPS, Dr. Sally Adukwu-Bolujoko, during the celebration of the annual NAPPS Day and 12th Anniversary, with the theme ‘Funding Private Education in Nigeria’, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Thursday.
Represented by the NAPPS State President, Chief (Hon) Victor A.D. Green (KSC) JP, she said, ‘ Our appeals to state government have not yielded desirable results because only a few states have harmonized their taxes. However, burdening the schools through taxes is an ill wind that does no one any good.’
She urged state government to review this trend, considering the enormous service private schools render in the communities.
Adukwu-Bolujoko, further solicited for the restructuring of the education trust fund into Education Bank with the mandate to grant loans to investors in basic education.
In their respective speeches, the chairman of the event, Dr. Ibituru Pepple, attributed the problem in Nigeria to lack of importance placed on Education and stressed that Nigerians dwell so much on ignorance.
On his part. the Special guest of Honour and Commissioner for Education, Hon. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja, represented by the Director of special duties, Dr. Reginald Osibor, commended NAPPS for its laudable strides in developing the educational sector and urged members to review school fees to enable parents afford quality education.
He warned that effective 2019, teachers without proper qualifications will not be allowed to teach in private schools in the state.
