There are strong indications that some bigwigs from the All Progressives Congress, APC, the major opposition political party in Rivers State, might defect to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the coming days.
If this turns out to be true, it would further deplete the fortunes of APC in the State, as the faction led by the Minister of Transportation, and Former Governor of the State, Chibuike Amaechi, is currently struggling to find their feet, following the sudden resignation of the party’s spokesman, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke.
Nwuke had shocked party men and women on Monday, when the news about his resignation as the party’s spokesman broke, sending shockwaves through the rank and file of the party across the Country, particularly the Rivers chapter, where bad publicity and internal conflict have left indelible marks, including almost irreparable damages.
While the faction led by Senator Magnus Abe heaved a sigh of relief when they received the news of Nwuke’s resignation, Amaechi’s faction has been in a state of despair. Nwuke, had botched every attempt by the Abe’s group to replicate incidents that led to the party’s misfortune in 2015 and 2019, which excluded her candidates from participating in the general elections in those periods.
A source who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Africa Update that all is not well and the centre can no longer hold in APC. The source disclosed that prior to Nwuke’s resignation, members of the party, nursed the dream of a better future for APC, but all that has changed as some former Federal Lawmakers, a former Ambassador, former Chairman of a State owned Commission and other stakeholders of the party are in talks with Governor Nyesom Wike to officially declare their allegiance to PDP.
If this eventually happens, it will put a final nail on the coffin of the party in the State, where PDP has held sway since 1999, and has consistently exhibited the ability to maintain that record for a long time.
