Abuja, Nigeria — Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has made a stunning claim, alleging that a military general attempted to have him assassinated during the 2019 general elections. Wike made the explosive revelation during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.
According to Wike, the assassination order was issued by then-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. Wike identified the military general as “General Saham,” the former General Officer Commanding 6 Division.
A Colonel’s Refusal
Wike further alleged that Amaechi had promised to make the general the next Chief of Staff. “General Saham ordered that I should be shot. When I heard that he is now in the NSA office, I refused to go there,” Wike said.
He claimed that a colonel who was given the order to shoot him refused, and as a result, was detained for six months. Wike used his personal experience to argue that many opposition governors who complain of persecution have not faced the same level of threats he endured while in office. The minister’s claims have sparked a fresh round of controversy and raised questions about the security apparatus during the 2019 elections.
