Two Lawmakers detained by DSS amidst Speaker’s Impeachment

The political turmoil surrounding the impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa continues to unfold with the detention of two lawmakers by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Lawmakers Sylvester Ogunkelu and Lanre Afinni were taken into custody by the DSS for questioning related to their involvement in the impeachment proceedings that removed Speaker Obasa on January 13th and installed his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as his successor.

Following their detention, several lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai, visited the DSS office to express their solidarity and demand the release of their colleagues.

A DSS source confirmed the detentions but noted that one of the lawmakers was later released on health grounds.

Despite his impeachment, former Speaker Obasa has maintained that his removal was unlawful and that he remains the rightful Speaker of the House.

This incident further intensifies the ongoing political crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly.
