The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) says it will not hesitate to cancel election results where ballot boxes and other electoral materials were snatched or hijacked.
The Commissioner in charge of Public Affairs/Civic Education in the Commission, Rev. Innocent Karibo gave the warning while addressing the people of Degema Local Government Area during a stakeholders meeting held at Degema.
The RSIEC Commissioner, who was represented by the Director, Public Affairs/Civic Education, Mrs. Menney-Amgbare Sarah Hope said that results of any Polling Units, Wards or LGA where election materials were either snatched or hijacked will not count.
She urged the people of Degema to be calm and law abiding and warned them not to allow themselves to be used by any politicians to incite violence, but for them to be upright and rely on RSIEC for any information as regards to the 2018 LGA polls.
Speaking in the same vein, an opinion leader in the area Mrs. Batubo Eriye called on parents to educate their children, most especially the male folks on the danger of engaging in political thuggery, noting that much of the problems encountered during elections were caused by politicians whom she accused of arming the youths after promising or giving them peanuts to snatch electoral materials and urged RSIEC to do more on voters’ education.
In their speeches, the representative of the Divisional Police Officer, Degema Division, Inspector Odoye Bala, Civil Defence Officer, TM Epelle and Chief O.D Iwo urged the people of Degema to make sure their votes count by adhering to the 2018 election guidelines as released by RSIEC and vote candidate of their choice without fear or favour.
The commission had visited Khana Local Governmmet Area, yesterday as part of ongoing sensitization tour aimed at sensitizing citizens in the 23 local government areas of the State.
