Rivers State Govt dissolves Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission

The Rivers State House of Assembly has dissolved the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) over alleged lack of accountability, Africa Update reports.

The Assembly took the decision at its sitting this morning following a request from Governor Nyesom Wike seeking for RSIEC’S dissolution and approval to reconstitute a new Board.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, who presided over plenary, read the letter from Governor Wike on the floor of the House, requesting the dissolution of the commission.

After an extensive debate on the matter, the lawmakers voted in affirmation of the Governor’s request, reiterating that the dissolution is in the best interest of Rivers people.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), is a statutory body constituted by the Government of Rivers State, Nigeria, under section 5(a) of the Independent Electoral Commission Law (2000) to oversee the implementation of election procedures.
