Rivers Primaries: Abe begs Amaechi

What most people had thought to be a show of bravado and audacity has crumbled like a pack of cards before the senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe and his supporters.

A close ally of Abe, told Africa update, that there is serious tension in the political camp of the Senator , following the failed attempt to conduct a kangaroo primaries on Sunday, September 30, 2018.

Speaking on conditions of anonymity, the source alleged that Abe had ran off to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole for what he described as a reconciliatory meeting in a bid to save what is left of his battered political image.

This move according to an insider, had stalled the scheduled senatorial primaries which was abruptly suspended today.

Though efforts to get more information from the source concerning Oshiomhole’s stance on the matter failed, Africa Update was reliably informed of an ongoing meeting between the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, Abe and Oshiomhole.

The meeting was reportedly called to plead for the return of Abe to the Senate, which Amaechi outrightly rejected because the Nigerian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Oji Ngofa, had already been screened.

Recall that Rivers state had in recent times made headlines not for new discoveries or economic feats but for the struggle for control .

Abe had engaged his former boss, Amaechi, in a fierce political war, which climaxed on Sunday, September 30, 2018, with the conduct of two Governorship primaries in the state.

Whereas the indirect primary which produced Tonye Patrick Cole as the APC Governorship candidate was conducted by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and delegates from the APC National Secretariat, the direct primary conducted by the Abe group did not have either of the important electoral umpire present.

According to a stakeholder from the Senator’s senatorial district, the direct primary stunt was pulled to allegedly avert mob attack as some of his supporters were disheartened by the turn of events as a result of distorted facts.

It is therefore not surprising to hear of this latest move by the Senator to plead for mercy.
