Port Harcourt, Nigeria — The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced its decision to probe the state’s finances during the six-month emergency rule led by Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas. This development follows the assembly’s resumption of sittings after President Bola Tinubu lifted the state of emergency on September 17.
The legislative body, presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, also demanded that reinstated Governor Siminalayi Fubara immediately submit a list of commissioner nominees for screening. The call for an investigation into the previous administration’s spending and the demand for new commissioners signal the assembly’s return to its legislative duties following the recent political crisis.
The assembly complex, which was demolished months ago by the state government, is reportedly undergoing reconstruction. The state of emergency was declared after the suspension of Governor Fubara and was lifted by President Tinubu, restoring democratic structures to the state. The move by the assembly to scrutinize the past administration is a clear indication of a new chapter in the state’s governance.
