Rivers Assembly crisis worsens as Two Speakers hold siting same day

The leadership crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly may have worsened despite permutations that a truce might be in the horizon following the intervention of some stakeholders after the invasion and subsequent destruction of the hallowed Chamber of the Assembly by yet to be identified arsonists.

On Tuesday November 21, some Lawmakers under the leadership of the recently installed Speaker, Rt Hon. Barr. Edison Ehie, passed a vote of confidence on the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

The Lawmakers commended the Governor on his developmental strides and security initiatives to keep Rivers State peaceful , stressing that it takes a man of great vision and peace to steer the ship of development for the benefit of the people of the State

The house resolved to continuously give the governor the required support to accomplish his consolidation and continuity agenda to benefit the State.

The Lawmakers condemned the attack on the Speaker’s residence and the burning of the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The House appealed to the governor to commence the rehabilitation works as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the house impressed on the need for the Inspector General of police, and other related security apparatus of state to investigate these attacks and bring the culprits to book.

Meanwhile other lawmakers led by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule held a sitting at the Assembly Complex, early same day.

Africa Update gathered that the lawmakers successfully deliberated on two items concerning the suspension of the strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN.

The lawmakers also asked the Police to prosecute the burning of the chamber.

Four police vans are stationed at the entrance of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. No vehicular and human movement were allowed on the Moscow road axis of Port Harcourt during the sitting. Our correspondent reports that some senior police officers locked the entrance of the State House of Assembly complex after the sitting. More police officers have now been deployed at the gate of the Assembly complex.
