Court rules on Chadian President’s trial

A special court, backed by the African Union, has sentenced former Chad President,  Hissene Habre to life imprisonment for rape, torture, sexual slavery, crimes against Humanity and war crimes committed during his reign as President  between 1982 and 1990., in the Senegalese capital Dakar on Monday.

The former President, according to Chadian and international rights groups, is responsible for the deaths of about 40,000 people.

Habre, who was Chad’s seventh president,  had rejected his trial by the special court and  repeatedly alleged that he was a victim of neocolonialism.

After about 19 months of investigations, the Senegalese authorities , working in conjunction  with the AU, indicted Habre in mid-2013 for war crimes and crimes against humanity, placing him under provisional detention. His first appearance in court was on July 20, 2015,

Habre who was overthrown about a quarter-century ago, had lived in exile in Senegal.. His supporters and  hundreds of people, including victims of his crimes attended the trial.
